Bandstand hits milestone, in Beatrice

BEATRICE - An historic structure in Beatrice is turning 100.

Among the events and activities of Homestead Days this weekend, the Beatrice Civic Garden Club will be holding a birthday party for the Nichols Park bandstand along West Court Street.

Rosalyn Shafer of the Garden Club says the public is encouraged to come to the bandstand following Saturday’s Homestead Days parade and enjoy hot dogs, ice cream, popcorn and music.

Over the past year the club and City of Beatrice have made a few improvements to the bandstand including benches around the structure, concrete parking spaces and plaques identifying the different flowers and plants. The Garden Club has been taking care of the flowers and plants around the bandstand since the late 1970s.

Karen Mains of the Garden Club says parking will be available to the west of the bandstand for Saturday’s event.  The Beatrice Community Band will perform a concert Friday evening at the bandstand to help kick-off the weekend celebration.

Shafer says the Garden Club is currently working on getting the one hundred year old structure listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
