CRETE, NE — For Public Health Solutions District Health Department (PHS), the return to more normal operations is happening at a different place.
PHS is based in Crete and serves five southeast Nebraska counties. On top of dealing with a once-in-a-century pandemic, the health department helped design and move into a new facility over the last year.
Health Director Kim Showalter says while it was a lot of work, the new space was too good to pass up.
“We did our due diligence, we did our homework, we looked at the rates," Showalter said. "It was just a great opportunity to expand our clinical services, which is something we’ve been wanting to do.”
PHS is now located in Saline Medical Plaza. The owners renovated the former Crete Manor long-term care facility and tailored the each section to the incoming tenants. For the health department, that means more clinic space to house the expanding immunization program and a dedicated room for dental care.
Showalter says her staff is now better equipped to provide all the services they did before the pandemic.
“When people make an appointment to come here for a clinic, they’re going to see a completely different atmosphere," Showalter said. "They’re going to see a completely different and very functional, effective space.”
PHS moved in last month but workers are still putting the finishing touches on the space. The health department is offering weekly vaccination clinics at the new offices.
