9-year-old Grand Island boy dies in one-vehicle crash on I-80

A 9-year-old Grand Island boy died in one-vehicle crash Sunday night on Interstate 80 in Cass County, Iowa.

Joshua Tavares was pronounced dead at the scene near the town of Walnut, according to an Iowa State Patrol report. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Investigators determined that a 2004 GMC vehicle was traveling west on I-80 when it slid off the road due to icy conditions caused by freezing rain and entered a ditch. The vehicle rolled onto its passenger side before coming to a stop.

The driver, Jesus Cantero-Perez, 40, and passengers Wendy Tavares, 35, Yamilet Cantero, 11, Ashley Tavares, 11, and Kimberly Tavares, 12, all of Grand Island, were taken to Cass Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa. Only the driver was wearing a seat belt, according to the report.

Ambulance crews from Walnut and Marne assisted at the scene.
