60-year-old inmate dies in custody of NDCS

LINCOLN, Neb. -- An inmate in his 60s died at a hospital in Lincoln Saturday.

Director of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services Scott Frakes announced that a 60-year-old male inmate died in the hospital.

Authorities say the inmate tested positive for COVID-19 before being in the hospital, along with underlying medical conditions.

NDCS says for the privacy of the family and to maintain confidentiality of the man's medical records in accordance with state law, NDCS is not releasing the name of the inmate.

Officials say the inmate's sentence was for charges out of Platte County that included possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine - and possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited person.

Authorities say the exact cause of death has not been determined. Whenever an inmate dies in the custody of the NDCS, a grand jury will conduct an investigation.
