CHEYENNE, Wyo. – A 25-year-old Sidney, Neb. man is dead after the vehicle he was riding in early Monday morning crashed into a semi truck and tractor trailer that had crossed the median on Interstate 80 east of Cheyenne, Wyo.
A 2013 Freightliner, driven by 36-year-old Vadym Koshman (Kent, Wash.), collided with two other semi truck and tractor trailers that were stopped in the emergency lane on the eastbound side of the interstate. The 18-wheeler then crossed the median, hitting two more vehicles in the westbound lanes shortly after 6:30 a.m.
Tyson A. Herrera, who was wearing a seat belt on the passenger side of the 2012 Ford vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. His sister, 21-year-old Jasmine N. Herrera, was the driver. She also wore her seat belt and was transported to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center with unknown injuries.
A 2005 Kenworth vehicle was also involved in the wreck, but the driver and passengers were not injured.
Koshman was wearing his seat belt and was transported to the hospital with unknown injuries. “Driver inattention” on Koshman’s part is being investigated as a cause for the crash, according to authorities.
Herrera was 2012 graduate of Sidney High School. He was also a pitcher and infielder for the Sidney American Legion Baseball program. His dad, Tim, was a coach for the team while Herrera was a member of the program.
“The Sidney Baseball community is heart broken to hear the news of the passing of former player, Tyson Herrera,” the Sidney Legion Baseball program said in a statement Monday night. “Tyson was a great player and epitomized the definition of hard work and playing for the love of the game. Prayers & condolences to his family and loved ones.”
Monday’s accident was the 45th fatality on Wyoming roadways in 2019. There were 22 total in 2018.
