Flames thought to be ignited by lightning strikes engulfed two homes early Saturday shortly after severe thunderstorms hit the Omaha area.
A house in the 4700 block of 173rd Circle in northwest Omaha was reported on fire at 2:23 a.m. Saturday, causing heavy damage to the home. No injuries were reported. The fire is thought to be caused by a lightning strike, police said. A second house fire on Craig Avenue in Bennington was reported at 3:17 a.m., a Douglas County dispatch officer said. No one was injured, but the fire caused considerable damage.
Fire crews were at the scene for several hours putting out hot spots. The Bennington fire chief said the fire was likely sparked by lightning, but he could not tell for sure. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
