A 15-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday morning after bringing a gun to Omaha South High School, police said.
The investigation began when one student said another may have brought a gun to the school, located at 4519 S. 24th St., according to a letter sent to parents.
The student under suspicion was located near 23rd and J Streets, across from the school, said Officer Phil Anson, police spokesman. The teen had a small-caliber pistol concealed on his person.
The youth was arrested on suspicion of gun possession, being a minor in possession of gun, concealing a weapon and carrying an unregistered firearm. He was booked into the Douglas County Youth Center.
The report did not indicate whether the gun was loaded.
Ruben Cano, principal of South High, commended the student who brought the issue to the attention of authorities and thanked parents.
“We appreciate your continued help in guiding our students in the use of good judgment in their actions for their safety and the safety of others,” Cano wrote parents.
“We take these situations very seriously and the appropriate disciplinary action will be taken,” he wrote.
