14-year-old boy finds loaded handgun while swimming, LPD investigating

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Lincoln Police are trying to figure out where a loaded handgun came from after a 14-year-old boy discovered it at the bottom of a lake this week.

The boy told officers that while swimming in Holmes Lake on Wednesday, he felt something at the bottom of the lake. When he reached down, he said, he felt a handgun, pulled it out, and then called police.

Arriving officers said the handgun was still loaded, but not reported stolen.

LPD said it will process the firearm and attempt to determine how it came to be submerged in the lake.

Officers state that the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to call Lincoln Police at 402-441-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600.
