GRAND ISLAND – The Islanders proved they could play with the best in the state, but fell just short of an upset victory.

No. 9 Grand Island hosted No. 3 Omaha North and fell 26-20 after the Vikings rattled off 20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.

A pair of Brian Covarrubias field goals, from 31 and 21 yards, gave the Islanders a 6-0 lead late in the second quarter, but Milton Sargbah reeled off a 74-yard run to tie things 6-6 following a missed PAT heading into halftime.

The Islanders stunned the Vikings on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter when Cole Evans hit Kohlten Keezer up the seam for an 80-yard strike to put GISH up 13-6. On the next Islander possession Evans capped off an 80-yard drive with a six-yard run to give the Islanders a 20-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

However, the Vikings comeback began with Zander Gray punching in a three-yard score with just under ten minutes to play, and on the next Omaha North possession Gray would find the end zone from seven yards out to tie things 20-20. Following a GISH three-and-out Sargbah dashed up the middle for 84 yards and the Vikings took a 26-20 lead after another missed PAT with 1:54 to go. The Islanders need up turning the ball over on downs and Omaha North would run outage clock.

Sargbah rushed for 267 yards while Gray added 118 for the Vikings.

John Riley led Grand Island with 104 yards on 21 carries.

Grand Island looks to bounce back next week when they travel to Millard South while Omaha North will host Lincoln East.
