Memorial Services for Charles Dobesh to be held Saturday, October 28
September 30, 1927 - September 28, 2017
People's Cooperative Funeral Home

Charles Dobesh passed from this life on September 28, 2017, at his home with family by his side. Charles was born on September 30, 1927, in Ansley, Nebraska to Arthur James Dobesh and Lillian Mary (Lambert) Dobesh. He attended all of his school years at Ansley Public Schools. After graduation, he attended the University of Nebraska.

Charles married Bonnie Ferguson in 1949 and the couple started their life together south of Ansley, Nebraska. Charles and Bonnie were parents to Jacki Ryan and Greg Dobesh

The family moved to the  Ed Maupin ranch on the  South Loup River where Charles worked for  Mr. Maupin for several years. Charles and Bonnie purchased the ranch in the 1950’s where Charles and Bonnie fed cattle and built up a 1000 head cattle herd. Charles also expanded the ranch and purchased several acres over the years which were well known as the Box Bar Ranch. The entire Dobesh family worked alongside Charles to build the Box Bar Ranch whose reputation was one of hard work, high expectations,  and outstanding cattle production and breeding.

The Box Bar was sold in 1981 and Charles headed to Pratt, Kansas where he spent 10 years before moving to Oklahoma. Four words come to mind with the name Charles Dobesh: fearless, demanding driven and generous. Charles had quite a reputation and he did not mince words. He was not politically correct but he took care of those who worked for him and the animals that depended on him. He understood cattle and he built the Box Bar Ranch through hard work and drive with Bonnie, Jacki, and Greg by his side doing what was expected.

While in Oklahoma, Charles began breeding and racing greyhounds. He applied this same standard to this endeavor as he did ranching. He loved and cared for his dogs. His wife, Nellie, worked alongside Charles as he established his reputation in the racing community. Charles was dedicated to everything he did.  Work was all Charles knew and he expected everything to be done correctly the first time.

Charles did not dwell on regrets. He made his amends by pushing ahead, working hard and rebuilding.

Charles is survived by his wife Nellie, Oklahoma, his daughter Jacki Ryan and husband Maurice of Broken Bow, Nebraska and his son Greg Dobesh and wife Jan also of Broken Bow, Nebraska. Charles’ legacy continues with his grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren: Kami and husband Chris, Kali and husband Shane, Kaci and husband Jason, Karisa and husband Nie, Kadi and husband, Alex, Kandi and husband, Kenneth and grandson, Barry Dobesh. Charles was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Memorial Services for Charles were held on Sunday, October 1, 2017, 2:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church in Sweetwater, Oklahoma located at 11012 Hwy 30, with Pastor Bill Smithey officiating.
