Memorial Services for Wilbur L. Holloway will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in Alma, Nebraska with Pastor Sarah Shanks and Mr. Gary Janssen officiating. Interment will take place at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, Nebraska, at a later date.
Wilbur Lee Holloway, 71, of Alma, died on Monday, November 27, 2017, at the Harlan County Health System in Alma. Wilbur was born November 5, 1946, in Aurora, Nebraska, the fourth of five children born to Roy and Valeta (Marvel) Holloway. He graduated from Aurora High School in 1965 and then pursued higher education at a Technical College in Omaha, Nebraska majoring in Auto Mechanics.
Wilbur was married to Kitty Duryea in May of 1966 in Lincoln, Nebraska and they had three children: Jon, Guy, and Kim. On June 21, 1966, Wilbur was inducted into the United States Army at Fort Carson, Colorado where he was stationed in Korea during the Vietnam War, and later served in the Army Reserve until 1972. He received the National Defense Service Medal and was honorably discharged.
Once done with his military service, he and his family returned to Aurora. Later, there were moves to Broken Bow, Nebraska and eventually, he and his family settled in Dunning, Nebraska. While in Broken Bow, Wilbur worked for the Chevy Garage and once moving to Dunning, he owned and operated his own automobile repair shop. Eventually, he became the head mechanic and lead bus driver for the Sandhills Public School system. He and Kitty later divorced.
On July 20, 1991, Wilbur was united in marriage to Joyce R. Ideen at the Sunken Gardens in Lincoln, Nebraska. Wilbur and Joyce lived in Dunning and eventually moved to Alma where Wilbur worked for Kayton Electric in Holdrege, Nebraska and Kip’s Garage in Alma. In 2000, Wilbur and Joyce purchased Fisherman’s Corner in Alma, which allowed Wilbur to combine his love for fishing with his business which he operated until his death.
Wilbur was an outdoor enthusiast and enjoyed hunting but his true love was fishing, especially in tournaments. According to Wilbur, “A bad day of fishing on the lake was always better than a good day at work.” Wilbur made friends wherever he went and was known for his dry sense of humor and colorful language. He has always had a love for woodworking which he recently rediscovered.
Wilbur was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Valeta; brother, Bob Holloway; brothers-in-law: Melvin Hinrichs and Clair Larsen; and nephew, Todd Holloway.
He is survived by; his wife, Joyce Holloway of Alma; children: Jon Holloway-Wallace and his husband, Randy of Omaha, Guy Holloway of Broken Bow, and Kimberly Schofield and her husband, David of Alma; step-daughters: Nancy Shannon of Wahoo, Nebraska, Jenny Cox and her husband, Mason of Holdrege; eight grandchildren: Kyra, Matthew, Gabrielle, Kaden, Corey, Cooper, Zackary and Drew; one great-grandson, Tyren; two sisters: Myrtle Hinrichs of Omaha and Mamie Salmon and her husband, Jerry of Geneva, Nebraska; brother, Bill Holloway and wife, Betty of Grand Island, Nebraska; sisters-in-law: Karen Holloway of Aurora, and Joan Larsen of Tuscan, Arizona; brother-in-law, Ken Ideen and his wife, Edie of Lincoln; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and many friends.
There will be no Memorial Book Signing or Visitation. A memorial has been established in Wilbur’s honor and will be designated at a later date.
