Margaret Joyce “Peg” Buchtel, 84, of Burwell, Nebraska died July 13, 2017, at her home.

Margaret “Peggy” Joyce Hubbard was born January 14, 1933, at Pierre, South Dakota, the youngest child of Samuel Durant and Cecile Madeline (Hill) Hubbard. Peg was their only child born in a hospital.

Peg grew up in or around Draper, South Dakota where she was very social and made the rounds almost every day to visit all the local businesses. In 1942 her parents divorced and Peg moved to Pierre with her mother. After a tumultuous year, Peg went to Mitchell, SD to stay with her dad’s sister Esther and Einor Peterson. Peg never left until she graduated from Mitchell High. Aunt Esther taught Peggy many things including how to be a lady.

Peg loved school especially reading, spelling and history. She loved to run track and acting in plays. Peg’s friends were never in short supply and stayed in correspondence with many throughout the years.

After graduating high school in 1951, Peg attended Sioux Valley School of Nursing in Sioux Falls, South Dakota graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1954. Peg met Royce Buchtel while doing rotations in Yankton, South Dakota during nurses training and the couple wed August 8, 1954. Peg and Royce were blessed with the birth of four children Stephan, Barbara, Timothy, and SueAnne.

With marriage to a pastor came a life of many moves, many hospitals, and many churches. Peg started her nursing career with Black Lung patients in Valley Springs, SD. The family then moved to Nebraska where she nursed at hospitals in West Point, Wahoo, Sargent, Burwell and Superior. She also employed at the Hastings Regional Center and Nelson nursing home. In 1998 Peg and Royce retired to Clay Center, NE. After Royce passed December 16, 2005, Peg moved to Burwell in 2009.

While raising a family amongst the moves Peg enjoyed being active in the church, square dancing, bowling, chasing after the kid’s activities, bible studies as well as playing bridge and don’t forget the Recipe Club.

Personally, Peg enjoyed volunteering which included a stint as camp nurse at Kamp Kaleo, the Burwell nursing home and reading to elementary kids in Clay Center and Burwell. She loved watching tennis, baseball, and golf on TV while always following all Huskers sports.  Peg always found time for her grandkids and great-grandkids sporting events and activities. On top of it all there was always time for a game of Scrabble but never interrupt Jeopardy.

Peg is survived by four children, Stephen and April Buchtel of Vancouver, Washington, Barbara and Steve Stanek of Burwell, Nebraska, Timothy Buchtel of St. Paul, Nebraska and SueAnne Buchtel of Olathe, Kansas.  Eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Peg was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four infant siblings, three brothers, John, Herb and James Hubbard, a sister, Phyllis Gannaway and two son-in-law’s, Don Holmes and Larry Prock.
