Dwight W Nelsen age 83, of Broken Bow, passed away November 10, 2018, at CHI St Francis Hospital in Grand Island, NE.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 16, 2018, at 11:00 A.M. at the Govier Brothers Chapel with Pastor Kathy Salts, PMA officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 15, 2018, from 9:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow, NE. A private family burial will be held at a later date at the Oconto Cemetery. Govier Brother Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences can be left at www.govierbrothers.com.
Dwight was born August 26, 1935, near Callaway to J. Sigurd and Adeline (Zoerb) Nelsen. Dwight moved with his family to Weeping Water then later moved to Oconto where he graduated in 1953. After high school, Dwight enlisted in the U.S. Army and spent 3 years in the military of which he spent 2 years in Germany with a heavy equipment unit rebuilding roads. He was released from the Army in 1956 and served in the Army Reserves until honorably discharged in 1962.
Dwight went to Kearney State College to pursue a pre-vet degree until he met the love of his life., On June 4, 1961, he married Kay Robertson at Callaway and made their home in Kearney. They were blessed with two daughters, Beth and Kimberly.
Dwight and his family moved to Edgar, Wisconsin in 1964, where they owned and operated a dairy farm. In 1974 they moved back to Broken Bow where they raised hogs and cattle. Dwight enjoyed going to livestock auctions especially when his grandkids could ride along. One of the grandkids best memories is listening to the market report and if the report was up, Grandpa loaded the hogs, the kids grabbed the snacks and off they went. Those times were very special to him and them.
Dwight also enjoyed gardening and was an avid sports fan. Most of all he liked to watch the Huskers play football, volleyball, and baseball. But most important to him was spending time with his family. He was very proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren seeing and hearing about all their accomplishments.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Kay of Broken Bow, NE, daughters Beth Caha and (Steve Erickson) of Hot Springs, South Dakota, and Kim and (Steve) Pedersen of Broken Bow, NE. Grandchildren Justin and (Melissa) Caha, Jenessa and (Eric) Cruise, Jason Pedersen, Stacy and (Dan) Strauss, Lacy and (Chad) Gracey, and Steve and (Nikki) Pedersen and twelve great-grandchildren. Brother Dean (Doreen) Nelsen, sisters, Inez (Harold) Richards and Linda Barker, several nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Dwight was preceded in death by his parents, brother James, and nephew Craig Nelsen.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial in Dwight’s memory to be designated at a later date.
