Ball fields at the Melham Sports Complex will be full this weekend as the "Spirit of the Sandhills" softball tournament comes to Bow

The “Spirit of the Sandhills” girls softball tournament returns to Broken Bow this week.  This marks the third year of the event.  KCNI/KBBN radio visited with Tom Griffith, president of the Custer County Diamond Youth Organization, about this year’s event.  Organizers are planning on 41 teams for this year’s tournament with competition taking place in three divisions (12 & under, 14 & under, and a combined 16-18 & under division).  Griffith said that teams will be coming from all over the state.

Games will begin on Friday evening and continue through Sunday.  Griffith said it takes a lot of volunteer help to run a tournament of this size.  One of the areas where additional help could be used is preparing fields between games.  If anyone is interested in assisting with this year’s tournament, in any capacity, you are encouraged to contact Griffith.

With the large numbers of visitors expected for the tournament this weekend, the economic impact will be significant.  Griffith said that it is rewarding when he hears positive comments from those who have traveled to participate in the tournament.
