State Football Playoffs – Area Preview

Broken Bow returns to the playoffs for the first time since 2015 and will begin their state football playoff run tonight when they host Pierce at Mark Russell Field in round one of the Class C1 playoffs.  Pierce won the Class C1 state championship last season and are 7-2 this season with losses coming to Boone Central and Battle Creek.  The Indians are also 7-2 this season and enter the C1 playoffs as the #8 seed.  Broken Bow head coach Carlie Wells visited with KCNI/KBBN sports and talked about the importance of finishing off drives.

 

Tonight’s playoff game between Broken Bow and Pierce will be broadcast on KCNI 1280 AM / 96.3 FM and kcni1280.com.  Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The Anselmo-Merna Coyotes are in the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2015.  AM defeated Summerland in round one 36-6.  Anselmo-Merna will face Stanton who defeated Heartland in the first round 57-12.  Both teams are now 8-1 on the season with AM’s only loss coming to top ranked Burwell and Stanton’s only loss came to undefeated Howells-Dodge.  AM head coach Matt McGinn visited with KCNI/KBBN sports and talked about what the focus has been in preparation for tonight’s matchup.

 

Tonight’s Class D1 playoff game between Anselmo-Merna and Stanton will be broadcast on KBBN 95.3 FM and on kbbn.com.  Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Sandhills/Thedford will host Mead this afternoon in the second round of the Class D2 state playoffs.  The undefeated Knights are the top seed in the D2 bracket and advanced to the second round with a 60-20 win over Lawrence Nelson in round one.  Mead is 5-4 after knocking off Wynot in the opening round 26-20.  S/T head coach Josh Deines talked to KCNI/KBBN sports this week and shared that their preparation each week is somewhat routine but can change a bit depending on the opponent.  Statistically, Mead has shown that they like to throw the ball which has the Knights focusing this week on their pass defense.

In other area playoff action today, Ansley/Litchfield will travel to Mullen to take on the Broncos.  Both teams were impressive in their opening round playoff wins with Ansley/Litchfield winning over Pleasanton 74-8 and Mullen winning over Loomis 58-12.  Today’s game is scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m. central time.  SEM opens play in the six man playoff bracket today.  The Mustangs qualified for the playoffs with a 5-3 overall record.  SEM will face Arthur County.  The two met back in week one with Arthur County winning a wild high scoring affair 101-80.  Today’s game is scheduled to kickoff at 3 p.m. central time.
