Staples and Duda Named Broken Bow Athletes of the Year

The Broken Bow Athletic Department handed out its awards for outstanding female and male athlete of the year Thursday evening.

The 2021 Broken Bow High School Female Athlete of the Year is Kali Staples.  Staples had a standout high school basketball career finishing as Broken Bow’s all time career assists leader.  Staples was a four year first team all Southwest Conference basketball selection and was honored as a second team Class C1 all state selection by the Lincoln Journal Star this year.  Staples was a second team all Southwest Conference volleyball selection as a senior and is a member of the Broken Bow track team where she has excelled this year in both the 1600 and 3200 meter run.  Staples has signed her letter of intent to play college basketball next season for Doane University.

The Broken Bow High School Male Athlete of the Year award went to Lathan Duda.  Duda had a standout wrestling career for Broken Bow.  Duda was a four time state medalist including a runner-up finish in Class C at 170 lbs. as a sophomore, state champion  in Class C at 182 lbs. as a junior, and state champion in Class B at 195 lbs. as a senior.  Duda was undefeated as a junior and senior. Duda was outstanding on the football field as well.  Duda suffered a leg injury in the opening game of the season in the fall but battled back to return to the field in the latter half of the season and received honorable mention all district.  Duda has signed his letter of intent to wrestle collegiately for North Dakota State University.
