S.O.R.C Coverage on KBBN

The Sandhills Open Road Challenge returns to Custer County and surrounding areas this week and weekend.  Activities begin today with the running of the “Loup 2 Loup” road race.  The L2L course is comprised of a north and south leg between Halsey and Purdum, Nebraska, of approximately 21 miles.  The race is scheduled to begin at 8:30 this morning.

Friday’s activities will be highlighted by the ½ mile and one mile shootout.  The one mile shootout was held for the first time in 2002 and is now one of the trademark events of the SORC activities. This event, along with the half mile shootout, is now an integral part of SORC and creates great excitement for drivers and more than 1,000 spectators each year.  The event is held one mile west of Callaway and  16 miles south on the Cozad/Callaway County Road.  The current speed record for the one mile is 234.1 mph set last year.

On Saturday it is the race that started it all, the annual Sandhills Open Road Challenge.  The 55 mile road race between Arnold and Dunning is arguably the most demanding event of its kind in the U.S. With more than 50 hazards and straits as long as three miles, the course offers a true challenge to drivers in every speed class.  Saturday’s race is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m.

Other S.O.R.C events include the parade and car show Friday afternoon at 2:30 in Arnold followed by the burnout contest at 4.  Awards will be announced and handed out during awards night Saturday evening at the Arnold City Park.

KBBN radio will provide live coverage of the Loup 2 Loup race on Thursday, the 1/2 mile and one mile shootout on Friday, and the Sandhills Open Road Challenge on Saturday.  Radio coverage can be heard on 95.3 FM and kbbn.com.  New this year, a live video stream accompanied by the radio call will be available on the following media platforms : KCNI/KBBN You Tube page ; SandhillsExpress Facebook page ; Twitter @KBBNsports and @KCNIKBBNradio
