PERU –  The Peru State Football Booster Club recently hosted their 16th annual powerlifting meet.

Tim Bowen, Booster Club Board of Director member and chair of the event, noted there were over 100 participants from schools from across Nebraska and Iowa that took part in the meet.

In the girls division, there was a tie for first place with 44 points, Lexington and Gretna.

In the boys division, Lexington placed first with 36 points, followed by Skutt Catholic with 19 points, and in third place was Omaha Gross.

In the coed division, Lexington places first with 60 points, Gretna is right behind with 53 points, and Lincoln High places third with 39 points.

The outstanding lifter for the girls’ lightweight division was Madison Smith from Lexington with 717.12 total score. Jaileigh Sorgenfrei from Gretna took the girls heavyweight title with 690.95 total points.

The outstanding lifter for the boys’ lightweight division was Will Mankhey from Gretna with 790.07 total points. For the heavyweight division, Harol Molina from Lexington had a score of 890.27 total points.

Numerous records were broken during the meet – especially on the girls’ side. They included: 105 lb. – Esmerelda Mendez – Lexington – 3 Lift Total of 430 lbs. with individual lifts being Squat of 145 lbs., Bench of 70 lbs., and Deadlift of 215 lbs. Mendez also broke the record for Deadlift by ten pounds with 215 lbs. The next record breakers are all in the UNL weight class. Maddi Sutton – Lexington – 3 Lift Total of 805 lbs. with individual lifts being Squat of 305 lbs., Bench of 145 lbs., and Deadlift of 355 lbs. Sutton also broke the record in Deadlift by ten pounds, with a lift of 355 lbs. Leslie Garcia – Lexington – 3 Lift total of 800 lbs., with individual lifts with Squat of 320 lbs., Bench of 140 lbs., and Deadlift of 340 lbs. Jennifer Sanchez – Lexington and Mallory Olmstead – Lexington, both broke the Bench records with 160 lbs., and 155 lbs.

Boys’ meet records set included:  In the 181 lb. weight class, Harol Molina – Lexington, broke a few records: 3 Lift Total of 1,325 lbs. – Squat of 460 lbs., Bench of 330 lbs., and Deadlift of 535 lbs. Molina also holds the Bench record with 330 lbs., and the Deadlift record with 535 lbs. Alex Barrios – Lexington broke the Deadlift record with 530 lbs.

Bowen was very pleased with the meet and how it turned out.  He said, “Having around 100 lifters was very good despite the weather and the meet went very well. The booster club appreciates the opportunity to host the meet at the College as it gives great exposure for Peru State.”
