5. Millard North 3-2 4

10. Omaha Mercy 4-2 NR

Class A

1. Millard West 5-0 2

2. Papillion-La Vista 7-0 8

3. Omaha Marian 5-1 1

4. Millard North 3-2 3

5. Lincoln Southeast 4-0 7

6. Lincoln Southwest 5-2 5

7. Lincoln East 6-2 10

8. Gretna 4-2 6

9. Papillion-LV South 4-2 NR

10. Millard South 2-3 9

Comments: How crowded is the Class A field? Millard South knocked off Class B No. 1 Elkhorn South in a shootout this week and still fell a spot in the ratings. Omaha Westside fell out after losses to Marian, Lincoln East and Papillion-La Vista South, the latter of which replaced the Warriors in this week’s rankings. Expect some clarity, especially at the top and bottom, with this week’s Metro tournament. One side of the bracket could have ranked showdowns in the quarterfinals.

Class B

1. Elkhorn South 5-2 2

2. Omaha Mercy 4-2 3

3. Omaha Skutt 4-2 1

4. Elkhorn 3-2 4

5. Columbus Scotus 4-0 7

6. Hastings 5-0 9

7. North Platte 7-1 6

8. Omaha Gross 3-2 NR

9. Omaha Roncalli 3-3 5

10. Omaha Duchesne 6-2 NR

Comments: A change at the top, where Elkhorn South takes over thanks to its wins over defending Class A champ Millard North and defending Class B champ Elkhorn in three days. The Storm outscored those two 7-0, enough to make it the new No. 1 despite a shootout loss to Millard South on Monday. Mercy jumps Skutt after a shootout win over the previously No. 1 SkyHawks. It’s a fluid situation in the lower third of the ratings, with a trio of River Cities Conference rivals owning those spots for now.

Boys

Top 10/Class A

1. Kearney 7-0 1

2. Om. Creighton Prep 7-0 2

3. Omaha South 7-0 3

4. Omaha Central 6-0 9

5. Lincoln East 6-0 NR

6. Lincoln Southwest 6-2 4

7. Omaha Burke 5-0 NR

8. Gretna 5-0 NR

9. Omaha Westside 3-5 8

10. Millard West 4-3 6

Comments: By this time next week, at least three of the seven remaining unbeatens will no longer have a zero in the loss column. If Prep, South, Central and Burke avoid upsets, you could have a Metro semifinal group with a combined 33-0 record. If seeds hold in the first round, each would have a tricky quarterfinal on short rest, though. Millard West barely hangs on to its spot in the ratings despite a loss to Papillion-La Vista South — which joins Grand Island and Elkhorn South as teams that fell out. Millard West’s 4-1 win over Class B No. 1 South Sioux City and a 2-0 win over Papillion-La Vista, which beat Papio South, make the bottom of the ratings a jumbled mess.

Class B

1. South Sioux City 3-3 1

2. Omaha Skutt 5-1 2

3. Lexington 5-2 6

4. Columbus 4-1 8

5. Elkhorn Mt. Michael 4-2 NR

6. Omaha Gross 5-2 3

7. Crete 4-1 9

8. Waverly 5-1 NR

9. Norris 5-1 NR

10. Omaha Roncalli 3-2 NR

Comments: A shift change in Class B, with nearly half of the teams in the preseason ratings out (Schuyler, Elkhorn, Lincoln Pius X, North Platte). Those four are a combined 10-16 — though six of those losses are to teams in the Class A ratings. They are also a combined 0-5 against teams in this week’s Class B rankings. Waverly, Norris and Roncalli each have tests against ranked opponents in the next week to prove that they belong. A Thursday night showdown between Skutt and Gross should help both get an idea of where they stand.
