Mullen and Burwell Look to Advance to State Football Finals in Lincoln

The state football semifinals in Classes D1 and D2 will be played today. The Mullen Broncos played in last year’s Class D2 semifinals but lost to Blue Hill. Today they will try to take that next step and advance to the state championship game which will be played at Lincoln’s Memorial Stadium next Monday, November 19th. Mullen went through the regular season undefeated and has collected playoff wins against Paxton, Garden County, and Overton. In order to advance to the state final, they will have to go on the road and play a Lawrence Nelson team who has gotten hot in the playoffs. Lawrence-Nelson finished the regular season at 5-3 and were the #11 seed in the west bracket entering the playoffs. In the playoffs, they have rattled off wins against Wauneta-Palisade, Clearwater-Orchard, and previously unbeaten Kenesaw in the quarterfinals. Today’s game is scheduled to kick off at 3pm central. In the other D2 semifinal today, it is a battle of unbeatens as Humphrey St. Francis hosts Johnson Brock at 5pm this evening.

The Burwell Longhorns will look to advance to their 3rd D1 championship game in the last 4 years. The Longhorns won the title in 2016 and were state runners up in 2015. Burwell is undefeated and has rolled through the playoffs with wins over Palmer, Sutherland, and Arcadia/Loup City in the quarterfinals. Burwell will host North Central today at 6pm. North Central is now 8-3 and has advanced through the playoffs with wins over Neligh-Oakdale, Nebraska Christian, and Dundy County-Stratton. The winner of tonight’s game will play for the D1 state title in Lincoln next Monday. Today’s other D1 semifinal will feature the top 2 seeds in the east bracket as undefeated Creighton hosts undefeated Exeter Milligan Friend at 5pm this evening.
