If you like to fish, Daryl Bauer says, now is the time.
“The crappie are going good, we’re hearing lots of good bass reports, catfish are taking off,” he said. “I heard good walleye reports this last week.
“It’s like Go Fish. What do you want to catch?”
A month ago, the Nebraska Game and Parks fisheries outreach program manager said, no one was catching anything. Since the weather has warmed, fishing has taken off.
Bass lakes across Nebraska are hopping. Bass of 5 to 6 pounds or more are still doing some feeding as they get ready to spawn.
Anglers don’t need to travel far to be successful. From farm ponds to public lakes in Omaha and Lincoln, everything is busting loose, Bauer said.
He had some suggestions on bait:
» Crappie: Small jigs or live minnow. A small minnow below a bobber is classic crappie fishing.
» Bass: Pick your favorite. Spinner baits are always good, Bauer said. Jigs are really good, paired with a plastic trailer of some kind.
» Walleye: Traditional favorites such as live bait rigs as well as trolling crankbaits work well.
May and June are two of the best months of the year for fishing, Bauer said.
“We are right in the middle of it.”
