District wrestling: Hastings and Skutt set for Class B state wrestling showdown

Class B

Top-ranked Hastings crowned four champions and held off No. 9 Grand Island Northwest by 1.5 points for the District B-2 title at Beatrice.

The Tigers trailed going to the medal round, but had district winners in Bryce Brown (113), Blayne Kile (120), Connor Laux (138) and Damen Pape (170). Northwest went a combined 1-6 in its first-place matches.

Hastings will have one fewer wrestler than No. 3 Omaha Skutt, winners of 19 of the past 20 Class B titles.

The SkyHawks moved 10 through in winning the District B-1 team title at York. Skutt had six district champions.

No. 7 Blair won the B-3 crown, qualifying 10 for state and finishing ahead of No. 2 Wahoo. Fourth-rated Sidney was the other district winner, taking the B-4 title in Gothenburg.

CLASS C

Defending champion Valentine, rated first in Class C, went 7-0 in the championship round to edge No. 2 Broken Bow by 1.5 points for the C-4 title at Bridgeport.

The Badgers qualified eight, one fewer than Broken Bow. No. 3 David City also qualified eight in winning the C-1 crown. No. 5 David City Aquinas put 11 through for the C-2 title, while Arlington won the team championship in C-3 at North Bend.

Three-time state champion Max Hughes of Syracuse evened his season series with Wood River’s Evan Waddington with a 4-2 decision at C-3’s 138 pounds. Hughes is one of three wrestlers going for a fourth title next week.

CLASS D

Five champions and nine qualifiers paced defending champion Burwell to the D-1 title at Weeping Water. The top-rated Broncos moved two more through than No. 2 Elkhorn Valley, which took the D-2 crown.

Pender and Mullen were the other two district winners.
