The Anselmo-Merna volleyball team qualified for the state volleyball tournament for the first time since 1972. AM claimed the D2-8 district championship Saturday with a straight set win over Garden County. Garden County opened the first set with an 11-0 run but Anselmo-Merna fought back and took their first lead of the match at 24-23 in set one and closed it out on the next point to win 25-23. AM would never trail again in the match as the Lady Coyotes took sets two and three by scores of 25-11, and 25-12. Anselmo-Merna qualifies for the NSAA state volleyball championships and will play their opening state tournament match on Thursday at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln. AM will be the #7 seed in the tournament and will play Humphrey St. Francis at 9 a.m. on Thursday. KCNI/KBBN radio will provide live radio coverage of Anselmo-Merna’s matches at the state tournament.
Broken Bow saw its volleyball season come to an end on Saturday as the Lady Indians fell to Bishop Neumann of Wahoo 3 sets to 1. Bishop Neumann won the first set 25-14 but Broken Bow fought back to tie the match winning the second set 25-15. Bishop Neumann took the third set 25-15 and then closed out the match in the fourth winning 25-18. Broken Bow concludes the season at 25-8.
In other district final action from Saturday, SEM fell to Overton at the D1-5 district championship. Overton won in straight sets 25-19, 25-15, 25-19. SEM concludes the season at 23-8. Superior defeated Burwell in the C2-3 district final. Superior won in straight sets 25-14, 25-16, 25-23. Gothenburg qualified for state for the first time in school history as they knocked off St. Paul in the C1-8 district final. The Swedes won in straight sets 25-18, 28-26, 26-19.
