Broken Bow Wrestling Brings Home Class C State Runner-up Trophy

The Broken Bow wrestling team concluded an outstanding 2018-19 season by claiming the state runner-up trophy at the state tournament over the weekend. Valentine was the team champion with 165 points with the Indians coming in second with 129 and David City was third with 120.5 points. It is the best team finish in school history. The Indians had seven wrestlers finish in the top six which is also a school best. Cole Ulmer and Lathan Duda each advanced to the championship bout of their weight class. Ulmer finished as the state runner-up falling by a 14-7 decision to David City’s Noah Styskal in the championship final. Duda was the state runner-up at 170 lbs. falling to undefeated Zach Borer of North Bend Central by technical fall in the championship. Spencer Gaffney became the first Broken Bow wrestler to be a four time state medalist. Gaffney claimed the third place medal at 120 lbs. After falling in the quarterfinals to eventual state champion Joseph Reimers of David City Aquinas, Trey Brooks battle back through the consolation bracket to claim third. Other medalists for the Indians included Drew Drake 4th at 285, Casey Faulkenberry 5th at 126, and Colton Duda 5th at 195 lbs. Freshman Kiefer Anderson went 1-2 at the tournament.
