Broken Bow to Host “Spirit of the Sandhills Summer Shootout” Girls Softball Tournament at Melham Park

The Melham Ball Field Complex in Broken Bow will be very busy this weekend as several girls fast pitch softball teams from the area and state will compete at the “Spirit of the Sandhills Summer Shootout”. Tournament director Tom Griffith visited with Central Nebraska’s Sports Source about the makeup and putting together of the tournament. There are 20 teams that will be competing in various age groups. The Broken Bow Spirit teams will be joined by teams from communities such as Cozad, McCook, Ord, Lexington, and York.The Broken Bow Spirit softball teams are looking forward to the opportunity to play at home this weekend. Mattie Bumgarner and Victoria Griffith who play for the 18 and under team told KCNI/KBBN that they are looking forward to playing in front of the home town fans this weekend. The girls also talked about how playing in a tournament can test your endurance and your mental toughness. It takes a lot of support to host a tournament of this size and Griffith says that volunteers are still needed in some areas and would be greatly appreciated.
