Broken Bow Seniors Come Back to Knock off Gothenburg at Area Tournament

The Broken Bow American Legion seniors baseball team opened play Friday night at the Class B Area 6 tournament in Gothenburg.  After trailing for the majority of the game, Broken Bow put together a big 6th inning to come back and knock off the host team Gothenburg 8-7.  Broken Bow trailed 7-2 going to the bottom of the sixth inning.  Bronson Long pitched 5 plus innings of strong baseball for the Gothenburg Melons but allowed a hit and a walk to start the 6th inning before he left the mound which helped set the table for a huge inning.  Broken Bow saw the first six men in the inning reach base before an out was recorded.  An RBI single by Austin Harvey followed by a pinch hit 2 RBI single by Coy Wardyn made the score 7-5.  With one out, Max Denson flew to right field which was deep enough to score Austin Harvey to bring Broken Bow to within a run.  With two out in the inning, Sawyer Bumgarner skied one just beyond the second base bag.  It appeared as though it would be caught when it left the bat but Gothenburg was unable to make a play as Coy Wardyn and Eli Coble scored to give Broken Bow its first lead of the game.  Brice Chaplin, Broken Bow’s third pitcher of the game, would make that lead stand as he faced just four batters in Gothenburg’s final at bat to help send Broken Bow to the winner’s bracket game on Sunday with a thrilling 8-7 win.  Eli Coble was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored.  Sawyer Bumgarner was 1 for 2 with two sacrifice flies and finished with four runs batted in.  Broken Bow will now get the day off on Saturday and will return to the field on Sunday to face the winner of Holdrege / Minden.  Sunday’s game is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Gothenburg and will be broadcast on KBBN 95.3 FM and on kbbn.com
