Broken Bow and Mullen Advance to State Semifinals

The Broken Bow Indians advanced to the Class C1 state semifinals with a thrilling 66-64 double overtime victory over Boone Central Newman Grove at the Boys State Basketball Tournament on Thursday. Broken Bow battled back from a 9 point halftime deficit to tie the game at 53 at the end of regulation. The two teams remained tied after the first overtime at 57 all. Boone Central Newman Grove missed a three at the buzzer in the second overtime as Bow celebrated its first state tournament victory since a one point win over Alliance back in 1988. Padyn Borders led the way for Bow with a team high 22. Tanner Linn finished with 15 and Josh Harvey also finished in double figures with 14. The Indians will play Winnebago in the semifinals as Winnebago defeated Syracuse 59-50. The game will tip off at 10:45 Friday morning at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln. The game will be broadcast live on KBBN 95.3 FM and will be simulcast on KCNI 96.3 FM and KCNI 1280 am. The other C1 semifinal will feature Lincoln Christian against top seed Wahoo.

The Mullen Broncos advanced to the Class D2 state semifinals Thursday night by defeating Mead 58-49. Mullen trailed by 1 at halftime but outscored Mead 18-11 in the third quarter and held on for the victory. Mullen was led by 3 players in double figures. Tell Spies led the way with 17, Brendon Walker had 15, and Luke Christen finished with 12 for the victorious Broncos. Mullen will play Riverside in the semifinals as Riverside defeated Wynot 54-48. The game will tip off at 8:45 Friday evening at the Devaney Center in Lincoln. The game will be broadcast live on KBBN 95.3 FM and on kbbn.com. The other D2 semifinal will feature top seed Falls City Sacred Heart against Giltner.

The South Loup Bobcats saw its season come to an end Thursday at the Class C2 boys state basketball tournament. The Bobcats fell to Hastings St. Cecilia 52-34. Cade Connell was the leading scorer for South Loup with a team high 17. South Loup ends the season at 21-4. Hastings St. Cecilia will play Yutan in Friday’s semifinals. Yutan defeated Arcadia/Loup City 65-54. The Rebels were able to keep pace with the #2 seed but fell a bit short in the end. Arcadia/Loup City was led by Tige Calleroz who finished with 22 points and Nolan Baker had 18. The Rebels end the season at 22-5. The other C2 semifinal will feature top seed Ponca against BRLD (Bancroft Rosalie – Lyons Decatur).
