Boys State Golf – Round 1 –

The first round of the NSAA boys state golf championships took place on Tuesday.  Four area golfers are in the top ten after day one of the Class D tournament at Lake Maloney Golf Club in North Platte.  Brendon Walker of Mullen is the tournament leader after day one.  Walker shot the low round of the day finishing with a 2 under par 70 which gives him a four shot lead going into the final round tomorrow.  Brett Downing of Sandhills/Thedford also had a strong opening round finishing day one with a 5 over par 77 which is currently 4th overall.  Colbi Smith of South Loup finished with an opening round 82.  Smith shot a 39 on the front nine and then followed it up with a 43 on the back.  Burwell qualified as a team in Class D and was led on day one by Barak Birch.  Birch, like Smith, finished with an 82 as both currently sit tied for 9th.   Burwell finished with a first day team score of 354 which is third after day one behind team leader North Platte St. Pat’s who shot a team total 329 and Elm Creek who is second after an opening day 341.

 

Broken Bow’s Blake Denson is competing at the Class B championships being played at the Elks Country Club in Columbus.  Denson shot an opening round 89 on the par 72 course which has him tied for 42nd overall after the first day of competition.  Jake Scherer of Gothenburg is in the top 10 of the Class B leaderboard after day one.  Scherer shot an opening round 6 over par 78 which is currently tied for 7th overall .   The Class B leader after round one is  Luke Gutschewski of Mount Michael Benedictine  who shot a low round of  one under par 71.  The team leader is Mt. Michael after an opening round team score of 325.

The final round of the boys golf state championships will be played Wednesday.
