Area Wrestlers Bring Home Medals at State Wrestling Tournament

Competition at the NSAA state high school wrestling championships concluded for Class D on Thursday.  It was an all area final at 182 lbs. Thursday night as Reece Zutavern of Sandhills/Thedford met Cooper Slingsby of Ansley/Litchfield for the gold medal.  Reece Zutavern would win the gold by an 11-7 decision as Cooper Slingsby takes the silver medal. Zutavern end the season at 48-1 and Slingsby finishes at 42-5. Brayton Branic of Sandhills/Thedford would follow his teammate with a gold medal performance. Branic won the 285 lb. championship defeating Logan Mueller of Summerland by a 7-4 decision. Branic finishes the season at 50-6. Dayton Gipe of Sandhills Valley (Stapleton/McPherson County) wrestled for the title at 120 lbs.  Gipe entered the final at 39-0 and faced 46-1 Scout Ashburn of Plainview.  Ashburn’s loss was to Gipe earlier in the season.  The match went to overtime tied 2-2.  In the overtime period Ashburn got the takedown to win 4-2 in sudden victory.  Gipe, a sophomore,  runner-up at 120 lbs. Burwell’s Alex Gideon was the runner-up at 195 lbs. Gideon fell to Gunner Reimers of Palmer by a 5-1 decision. Gideon ends the season at 30-5.
