Area Teams Compete in Girls District Finals as They Look to Qualify for State

Several area girls basketball teams will compete today in sub state and will look to qualify for the NSAA girls state basketball championships which begin next week in Lincoln. Broken Bow will play in its third straight district final when they face Columbus Scotus at Northwest High School in Grand Island for the C1-5 district title. Broken Bow is the #5 seed in the sub state tournament while Columbus Scotus is the #12 seed. Both teams qualified for the district finals by winning their sub district tournament. Broken Bow advanced through the C1-10 sub district tournament with wins over Ainsworth and O’Neill. Scotus advanced through the C1-7 sub district tournament with wins over Boone Central and David City. Central Nebraska’s Sports Source visited this week with Broken Bow girls basketball coach Kelly Cooksley and he said that he has been pleased with the team’s preparation this week in practice.

 

Broken Bow is 22-1 this season and Columbus Scotus is 15-8 entering tonight’s game but Coach Cooksley said don’t let Scotus’ record fool you, they are very good and will present a strong challenge

Anselmo-Merna makes it back to a district final for the second year in a row as the Lady Coyotes will face Bruning Davenport Shickley for the D1-6 district final at Wilcox-Hildreth tonight.  AM is 17-6 on the season while BDS enters tonight’s game with an overall mark of 17-7.  Both teams advanced to the district final by winning their sub district tournament.  Anselmo-Merna advanced through the D1-10 sub district with wins over Sandhills  Valley and Ansley/Litchfield.  BDS advanced through the D1-7 sub district with wins over Heartland and Meridian.  Tonight’s game will be broadcast on KBBN 95.3 FM and on kbbn.com.  Tip off for the game is scheduled for 6:30 pm.

South Loup is one win away from qualifying for the girls state tournament as the Lady Bobcats will face Wood River for the C2-2 district championship.  South Loup is 18-4 this season and advanced through the C2-11 sub district tournament with wins over Hi-Line and Perkins County.  Wood River is 23-2 and advanced through the C2-10 sub district with wins over Blue Hill and Elm Creek.  Tip off for tonight’s game is scheduled for 7 pm.

Mullen is back in a district final as they look for a return trip to the state tournament.  Mullen will face Loomis tonight in Brady for the D2-4 district title.  Mullen is on a 16 game winning streak and is 23-2 overall.  The Lady Broncos advanced to the district championship by winning the D2-10 sub district tournament with wins over Paxton and Arthur County.  Loomis is 14-11 and advanced through the D2-8 sub district tournament with wins over Bertrand and SEM.  Tonight’s game will tip at 7:15.

SEM qualified for the D2 sub state tournament as a wildcard.  The Lady Mustangs will face Chambers Wheeler Central in Ord for the D2-3 district title.  Tip time is set for 6 pm.
