Anselmo-Merna and Gothenburg Volleyball Teams Receive AVCA All Academic Award

The United States Marine Corps and the American Volleyball Coaches Association announced this week that more than 1,200 collegiate and high school volleyball teams have earned the USMC/AVCA team academic award this season.  The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale.

AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer said, “Academic achievement does not happen by accident.  I’m so proud of the hundreds of coaching staffs that make excellence in the classroom a priority.”

There were 425 high school girls volleyball teams that were honored across the nation with this award and 29 teams in the state of Nebraska.  Among the teams honored in Nebraska were Anselmo-Merna and Gothenburg.  Not only did the two teams have success in the classroom they had great success on the court this past season as well.  Anselmo-Merna finished the 2021-22 volleyball season with an overall record of 24-9, won the D2-8 district volleyball championship, and qualified for the NSAA state volleyball championships for the first time since 1972.  Gothenburg finished the season with an overall record of 27-9, won the C1-8 district championship, and made their first appearance at the NSAA state volleyball championships.
