HARTINGTON - A Yankton man is accused of lying to authorities about a fatal accident.

Twenty-six year old Derrik Nelson is accused of a misdemeanor charge of false reporting. Cedar County authorities say in court documents that the charge is related to the death of 21-year old Jessi Anderson last June.

Anderson was found dead at a rural intersection west of St. Helena. Authorities determined she had been thrown from an ATV.

In court documents filed last week, officials with the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office say Nelson fabricated details of the incident to them, claiming that Anderson was on an ATV with a college friend.

But officials say video evidence shows that Anderson and Nelson were on an ATV together consuming alcohol, and that Nelson was later seen later on the same ATV by himself.

Nelson is currently out on bond. He’ll be back in Cedar County Court for arraignment April 18th.
