Woman Given 4-8 Years for Dealing Meth in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Neb. - A Grand Island woman was sent to prison after a police informant bought four ounces of meth from her in Columbus last year, according to records. 46-year-old Carla Velasquez was given 4-8 years by Judge Robert Steinke in Platte County District court. Records say Velasquez sold around four ounces of meth to an informant from January to March of 2017. She had no criminal history prior to her felony drug dealing conviction, with her attorney saying she would be a candidate for probation - if she was not subjected to a mandatory minimum of three years. The state argued that she needs to serve a prison stint because she contributed to the meth problem in Platte County. Steinke told Velasquez she must serve three and a half years before being eligible for release. She was given credit for 17 days already served.
