Cruel winds rushing through central and eastern Nebraska could cause the coldest conditions of the year.
The National Weather Service issued high wind warnings and advisories to the area on Monday. A wind chill warning is in effect through Wednesday, with some parts of the state seeing wind chill readings possibly as low as 55-below zero Tuesday night.
Taking home the crown for highest wind gust Monday was Broken Bow, which registered a 70 miles per hour gust. Many cities in the eastern half of the state recorded gusts of over 60 miles per hour.
Mid-week forecasts of below zero temperatures and double-digit wind chills finds the head of Nebraska’s largest county healthy department issuing rarely heard warnings.
Douglas County Health Director Dr. Adi Pour says the frigid temperatures can lead “to death or life-altering injury.”
Pour is urging folks to limit their time outdoors and be aware of the signs of frostbite in yourself or someone else.
Those signs include shivering, exhaustion, confusion or fumbling hands. Slurred speech and drowsiness are other symptoms.
