Welcome Center In Northeast Nebraska Likely To Close

CROFTON – A lack of funding is threatening to shut down the Corps of Discovery Welcome Center in northeastern Nebraska.

The rest area, which has been open for 18 years, sits along Highway 81 in Cedar County, just south of the South Dakota border at Yankton.

The center has been a popular spot not only for travelers, but also a gathering place for presentations, local vendors and families.

The center’s major funding source, the Lewis & Clark Natural Resources District, recently told the board that it would not continue its financial support.

The board will meet Friday — likely for the last time as the board is expected to formally close the center.
