UNL White Supremacist is a Norfolk Native; Has Previous Drug Conviction

LINCOLN - The linchpin in the debate over what is allowable free speech on the campus of the University of Nebraska has northeast Nebraska ties. About 300 people rallied on campus Thursday in protest of white nationalist views. The uproar began over a Norfolk native, Daniel Kleve, a bio-chemistry major at UNL who participated in the white nationalist rallies in Charlottesville and has posted numerous videos online railing against multiculturalism and advocating violence. Madison County court records show that Kleve changed his name from Daniel Carstens in 2015. As Daniel Carstens, he was arrested in Norfolk in 2012 and pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of possession of marijuana, for which he was fined $300. He also had numerous juvenile court cases. Kleve's online postings have caused an uproar on UNL's campus, with some calling for his expulsion. Kleve responded in an official statement on Wednesday, saying his words have been twisted, and that he is not actually a proponent of violence.
