Tips on Properly Installing Your Child’s Car Seat

NORFOLK, NE — Knowing how to properly install a carseat for your child can be the difference between life and death. According to Nebraska state law, all children up to the age of six must ride completely secured in a federally approved child safety seat. Suzanne Rutten is a child safety seat instructor. She's been keeping kids safe and checking car seats for 18 years. Rutten says there is the law of the land and law of motor vehicle crashes. That is why she suggest parents go beyond the six year minimum and keep kids in their car seats as long as they can. Rutten says a mistake parents might make is not keeping the strap tight enough on their child. “A lot of parents think all they have to do is buckle them in and way they go. The most common things we see when we look at misuse is the seat not being locked tightly into the vehicle…" If you want to get your car seat checked out, here’s what you need to know. “We do the seat inspector station twice a month. The first Tuesday is always over the the Norfolk GM Auto Center from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. On the third Tuesday we are the fire station from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and we’re indoors, so we go all year round. Just call and book an appointment at the hospital 402-644-7520."
