An inmate at the Tecumseh State Prison has been charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of a fellow inmate during a violent disturbance there in March.
Eric L. Ramos, 26, was charged Tuesday in connection with the March 2 death of inmate Michael J. Galindo.
Galindo, 31, and another, Damon E. Fitzgerald, 39, were slain in separate incidents during a disturbance at the prison. Galindo’s body was found by prison officials near a pile of smoldering combustible materials inside a cell, according to a statement released Tuesday night by corrections officials.
An autopsy determined that he died as a result of inhaling smoke. A contributing cause was multiple sharp and blunt-force injuries.
Ramos also faces other felonies related to Galindo’s death. Prosecutors will decide later whether to allege aggravating circumstances that could potentially make Ramos eligible for the death penalty.
The investigation into Fitzgerald’s death continues.
