Sylvester’s 12th Annual Chili Cook-Off and Benefit Auction

Our community is amazing about coming together and raising money for good organizations

- Jeanne Schumacher

BROKEN BOW—Come one, come all, and come hungry to the 12th annual Sylvester’s Chili Cook-off and benefit auction on Saturday, April 7th. Fred and Jeanne Schumacher have seen up to 49 chili entries for this event and love to support local organizations who aim to grow and inspire Custer County youth.

This year’s proceeds will go to the Hunters for Youth (HFY) non-profit organization whose mission is to “help get our youth outdoors and keep Nebraska’s hunting and fishing heritage alive.”

HFY aims to teach local youth about conservation, respect, accountability, hunting, fishing, shooting, archery, game/fish laws, and how to be a responsible youth in the great outdoors.

Fred Schumacher believes “if you can get somebody outside, it could change their whole life I think.”

The organization implements a mentor program for one-on-one outdoor experiences and also group programs, without costing youth or their parents who might not otherwise have these opportunities to enjoy nature in Nebraska.

“There’s a need for this for youth around here. You know, we always look for something with kids but there seems to always be an organization that needs some money,” Fred Schumacher said.

The Chili Cook-off and auction will feature crockpots full of delicious chili and a panel of judges to try each recipe.

Please register your chili by calling 872-6204 or stopping by Sly’s. There is a $5 entry fee for chili, all proceeds also donated to Hunters for Youth. (A crockpot liner is included with your entry fee.)

On April 7, chili check-in will take place from 3 to 4 p.m. with judging at 5 p.m. Everyone will get to enjoy the chili after judging and then the raffle drawing and live auction will take place at 7 p.m.

The live auction features donations from local businesses and individuals. Jeanne told KCNI/KBBN Hunters for Youth will also be donating a gun to the live auction with the HFY and Sly’s logos on the stock. The Schumachers appreciate the support from donors and event attendees to benefit area youth.

“Without all the area businesses and all the people we couldn’t make this possible. I mean, it’s a lot of work on our part but our community is amazing about coming together and raising money for good organizations,” Jeanne said.

Two raffle prizes (exactly alike) are also up for grabs! All are encouraged to buy raffle tickets for a chance to win a two-night stay at the Deadwood Mountain Grand Hotel and Casino. This includes a $500 gift card and $300 spending money. Tickets: one for $5 or five for $20.

Chili entries and live auction items are still being accepted. Call 872-6204 for more information and come out to Sly’s for a good time! (723 East S East St, Broken Bow, NE 68822)
