The Custer County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce that K9 Officer Vinnie was nominated for the 2019 Aftermath K9 Grant Contest! Vinnie, is the K9 partner of Sergeant Barrett Gibbons of the Custer County Sheriff’s Office.

The two have been partners ever since Sergeant Gibbons found the need to have a K9 with the sheriff’s office to help combat the movement of drugs across the county and across the state.

According to Sergeant Gibbons, Vinnie is a single purpose dog which means his only job is to find illegal drugs. Specifically, Vinnie indicates on the odor of marijuana, methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin.

Sergeant Gibbons noted that Vinnie has a passive indication which means that when he finds the strongest odor of the illegal substance, he will simply sit. This indication gives the officers the information needed to quickly locate the drugs.

The grant that Vinnie has been nominated for is awarded to law enforcement agencies and first responders in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The top five placings and two honorable mentions are awarded a specific amount of money that will go toward the department’s K9 programs for training, equipment, etc.

Voting is currently open and will end at 11:59 PM November 3 with the winner being determined by popular vote. You can vote one time each day by going to aftermath.com/k9grant. Simply click on the West Region and find Vinnie’s picture to cast your vote. Ages 6 and up are able to vote.
