SOUTH SIOUX CITY – A South Sioux City Police Officer is returning home after being injured in the line of duty.

Officer Brian Van Berkum was discharged from the hospital Thursday morning.

Van Berkum was hospitalized last Saturday after being shot twice outside of a bar in South Sioux City. Police say he was responding to a report of a man with a gun in the area. He exchanged gunfire with 25-year-old Luis Quinones Rosa, who was shot and died of his injuries.

Officer Van Berkum was escorted to his home by the Nebraska State Patrol, South Sioux Police Department and the Woodbury and Dakota County Sheriff’s Offices.
