Schuyler Man Awaiting Mental Evaluation in Teen Sex Case

SCHUYLER, Neb. - A Schuyler man, charged with sexually assaulting a teen-age girl, is in a Lincoln psychiatric hospital while doctors determine his mental status. 22-year-old Johnny Juan is accused of first-degree sexual assault. Colfax County Attorney Denise Kracl says she does not know when a decision on Juan will be made. Kracl says Juan could be considered not competent to stand trial, not guilty by reason of insanity or disabled and tried under a different statute. According to court records: Police saw the text messages of a 14-year-old Schuyler girl indicating that Juan had sex with her. The teen initially told police the two did not meet up. When police contacted Juan, he first denied knowing the girl, but later admitted to asking her for sex after police showed him his text messages. Juan said the two were supposed to meet up, but never did. A few days later, police were told by the victim's friend that Juan had touched the girl inappropriately. Juan and the girl also denied this. According to police the girl eventually said the two had sexual intercourse in a Schuyler home. Police say Juan admitted lying to them. If convicted Juan faces up to 52 years in prison.
