Road Crews Preparing For Freezing Night After Blizzard

NEBRASKA CITY – County road crews in Otoe and Richardson counties are preparing to re-deploy snow plows early Monday morning. Motor graders were clearing roads in Otoe County shortly after the snow stopped around 1 p.m., but Highway Superintendent Jon Brinkman expects east and west roads to drift over through the night. Richardson County Roads Superintendent Steve Darveau said there was still blowing snow around sunset. He said graders will be out at 4 a.m. Monday. Temperatures continue to fall. The Nebraska City Airport reported a temperature of 42 degrees early Sunday morning, but the temperature had fallen to 25 degrees by sunset. Wind gusts of 40 mph were reported at Brenner Field in Falls City. Nebraska City officials declared a snow emergency around noon after six to inches of snow fell. Brinkman said the county roads are hazardous. He said a driver may go a mile without seeing any drifts, then encounter an area where drifts cover the roadway. Richardson County reported freezing fog after the snow stopped.
