Raising Awareness on Domestic Violence, Pets Also Affected

BEATRICE - Two organizations plan on teaming up in the month of October to bring awareness to domestic violence. Hope Crisis Center Director Carmen Hinman says, "October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and it is also Adopt a Shelter Pet Month. We thought it would be a great opportunity to team up with the Humane Society. Bring attention and awareness to the correlation of domestic violence and pet abuse."
The Beatrice Humane Society and Hope Crisis Center hopes to educate the public on the effects of domestic violence in a home and how pets can also be harmed in the abusive atmosphere.
Hinman says, "It can be a way to get to the victim as well by harming that pet, or having that pet be a part of the violence."
The event is meant to bring the community together and shed light upon a topic that should be discussed more often. You and your pets are invited to attend the special event in Charles Park on October 24th.
