R2-D2 Hits Theater for Star Wars Premiere in Columbus

COLUMBUS - A fan favorite from the Star Wars series is moving about the Center 7 Theatre to greet fans watching the premiere of Star Wars The Last Jedi. Advanced Technology Design Instructor Leon Finecy says the Skills USA built the R2-D2 using a 3D printer. The group printed several plastic pieces, before glueing them together. Afterwards the group added the electrical components, in addition to a bluetooth interface, which allows them to control the robot with an Xbox gaming controller. "Last year we had the idea of, we nee something we can build that we can take out for recruiting purposes, and take to the community, and use it as a community service project as well," says Finecy Skills USA  President Logan Plock says in addition to showing it off at the Star Wars premiere, they hope to take the robot to children's hospitals, and other events. "I think my favorite part is getting him constructed. It was kind of neat to piece everything together and watching it just come to life," says Plock. The robot was on display at the Thursday night premiere, and will also be at the theater on Friday night starting at 5:45 p.m. for photo opportunities.
