Pow Wow Celebrates and Passes on Ponca Tribe Traditions

NIOBRARA - A Nebraska tribe is celebrating their rich history and passing on the legacy to another generation. The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska held their annual Pow Wow southwest of Niobrara this weekend. The event featured traditional dances and various competitions that celebrate the Ponca way of life. “This event is a celebration of family,” said Shannon Wright, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Ponca Tribe. “It’s a gathering of a lot of people who haven’t seen each other in a while. We do it once a year, so people get geared up for this event.” Wright said the Pow Wow helps their traditions progress from generation to generation. “You have a father or mother who may have been dancing for 20 or 30 years,” Wright said. “They want to pass all that knowledge on to their children, get them in the area and keep that history going.” Wright says the planning committee was pleased with the turnout. “To see everything come together is satisfying,” said Wright. “To see everybody show up is satisfying. We hope everyone has a great time.” The three-day event wraps up Sunday with the grand entry beginning in the afternoon.
