PERU – Former Nebraska City resident Tesla Oldfield was recently diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease) and her former school is doing a fundraiser in her name.
Phi Epsilon Kappa at Peru State College is hosting a “24 Hours for Tesla” event on Jan. 25 and 26 to help offset the cost of treatment for the family and to help raise awareness of ALS. The event will take place at the school’s Al Wheeler Activity Center.
During the event, teams will have at least one person either walking on a treadmill in the fitness center or around the track for one hour over a 24-hour period. The walk will begin at 1 p.m. Friday and will conclude at 1 p.m. on Saturday prior to the basketball games scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
Each team member will donate $10 and will receive a “24 Hours for Tesla” t-shirt. Total mileage will be recorded at the end of the 24 hours and the team with the most miles will receive a coupon for all team members to eat at Valentino’s in Nebraska City.

Oldfield was a multi-year participant in both softball and cross country for the Bobcats.
“She is an amazing young woman and an incredible fighter,” Professor of Kinesiology and advisor for PEK, Dr. Kyle Ryan said. “If there is one thing I am sure of, it’s that she is not resigned to accept this diagnosis as is. Both Tesla and Derrick embody what it means to be a Peru State College Bobcat, as they have always been willing to do the work provided in order to be successful.”
Oldfield currently lives with her fiancée Derrick Davis and their daughter Harbor in Florida. Davis was a 2014 Peru State graduate and a baseball and football player.
