NORFOLK — Northeast Nebraska is one step closer to having the facilities to provide a continuum of care to the community. Members of Norfolk Medical Real Estate and their families participated in a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony at the future site of the medical offices at Fountain Point on Wednesday afternoon. The 55-acre property at 37th and Highway 275 is a community campus that will hold medical offices, assisted living and apartment homes. The project drew praise from the ceremony’s notable guests including Speaker of the Nebraska Legislature Jim Scheer. “It is truly a miracle that we are at where we are at today, based on where we were at years before,” Scheer said. Norfolk Mayor Josh Moenning praised the organizers’ communication while Physician Liaison Mary Kay Uhing gave credit to both the independent physicians and Faith Regional Health Services. Representatives from builder Chief Industries noted the development’s steel will come from Norfolk Iron and Metal and Vulcraft, making it a community project. Scheer gave credit to independent physician owners of Norfolk Medical Real Estate who formed together to start the project. “It is truly remarkable the dedication of the physicians that are putting their own skin in the game to provide this facility. It speaks volumes, not only about them, but the community we live in,” Scheer said. A groundbreaking for the 90,000 square foot assisted living and memory care facility could take place next spring with the 110-unit apartment complex coming next. Uhing says the community’s support will make the project a reality. “When the right people step up to do the right thing that’s going to benefit so many people in our community, you have to support that,” Uhing said. "We have had a ton of support and that’s why this is going to make it and be successful.”
