BROKEN BOW—Jump on in, the water is great! Today (June 1) marks the opening day for the Broken Bow Aquatic Center and Swimming Pool (1053 Laurel Drive, Broken Bow, NE 68822). The pool opens today at 12:30 p.m. and Manager Laurie French said pool and parks staff have been busy getting everything ready for the summer season. “It’s a lot of work but we get the job done and I’m really proud of our lifeguards this year, we have a great staff. So we’re looking forward to it and we’ve got some great assistant managers as well,” Laurie French said.

In addition to regular pool hours and activities, swim lessons will be offered June 25-29 and July 9-13 and July 23-27. French thanked the Salvation Army for its generous donation which helps keep swim lessons affordable. Lessons are offered through the Red Cross and signups will take place on June 11.

Water aerobics will begin June 18 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. for $1.

French said the pool staff is made up of 25 dedicated individuals this season with seven to eight lifeguards working at one time. Lifeguards must go through a rigorous certification process before the summer season.

“I get to really spend a lot of time training our lifeguards. It’s a 30-hour class that they have to take. There are three tests, three written tests that they have to do; one is in CPR, one is in lifeguarding skills, and the other one is in water park skills,” French said.

Lifeguards are also tested on rescue scenarios and must be CPR certified on an annual basis through the American Red Cross.
