One-Day Free Eye Exams a Hit in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Neb. - It did not take long for the list to fill up for free eye exams at the East Central District Health Department on Tuesday. "Well we maxed out our capacity in our first hour," says organizer Marlene Cordon of East Central District Health Department. The Envolve Vison van that travels across the country, stopped in Columbus for six hours, taking appointments from as many folks as they could. "Anyone who does not have health insurance or is under-insured, that do not have vision coverage. Children, elderly, I mean you call it, pretty much anyone that feels their vision is important," says Cordon. The free exams give relief to many in the area, who have to pay anywhere from $45-$150 just for an appointment. That's why so many lined up in the early morning hours in Columbus. "I heard from our building manager that we had people here at six in the morning already," says Cordon. The van will plan on traveling to Norfolk and Omaha over the next two days, but Cordon says her office will look into seeing if the van can come back, or hosting their own event. "We are hoping that, because of what we saw today, that we know it's a huge need in our comunity," says Cordon.
